Setting up baby’s nursery can be expensive. Before you start buying furniture, bedding and accessories, though, make a plan for baby’s nursery and try to stick to it. Consider how long you’ll really use the nursery furniture or accessories. If you think they’ll be in storage in a few years, that may help you cut pricier items from your must-haves list.
A nursery is your child’s first room so it’s important to carefully consider what goes in it. It’s a good idea to have all the practical bits such as spare clothes close to hand, as well as storage so you can tidy away any unwanted clutter.
The baby furniture you choose will depend on the age and size of your little one. A newborn will need a cot or Moses basket if you want to stay close to them in those early days. As your baby grows, you might want to consider cot beds or toddler beds before they get a grown-up bed of their own.

Any new baby crib you purchase is supposed to meet minimum government requirements. If you assemble it to the manufacturer’s instructions and use the crib properly, even the least expensive crib should be safe for baby. Occasionally, an unsafe crib slips through, though, so keep an eye on current baby products recalls, just in case. A safe crib should have a firm, tight-fitting mattress, no missing/broken hardware or slats and no cutouts in the head- or foot-boards. Slats should be no more than 2 3/8″ apart (the width of a soda can). Corner posts should not be higher than 1/16″.
